How to Use Annotation Tools in the Document Viewer

The document viewer within leafplanner provides powerful annotation capabilities designed to help you engage more meaningfully with your documents. Whether you’re reviewing a trust agreement, operating document, or estate plan, the annotation tools make it easy to highlight key points, leave comments, and collaborate effectively—all without leaving the platform.

Accessing Annotation Tools

  1. Open a Document
Navigate to the relevant document within your leafplan and select it to open in the viewer.

  2. Activate the Toolbar
Once the document is open, you'll see a toolbar across the top of the viewer window. This contains all available annotation tools.

Key Annotation Tools and How to Use Them

  • Highlight
Click the highlighter icon, then select text within the document. This is ideal for marking important clauses or terms you want to revisit later.

  • Comment / Sticky Note
Use the comment tool to leave notes anywhere on the page. Click the note icon, then click where you want to place the comment. This is useful for questions, reminders, or observations.

  • Underline / Strikeout
For more precise textual emphasis, choose the underline or strikeout tools to draw attention to additions or suggest removals.

  • Freehand Drawing
Select the pencil or drawing tool to make handwritten notes or draw shapes. Helpful for circling sections or drawing attention to diagrams.

  • Shapes and Lines
Add rectangles, circles, arrows, and lines to visually organize or call out parts of a document.

  • Text Tool
Insert standalone text boxes anywhere on the page. Useful for labeling or summarizing sections.

Saving and Sharing Annotations

All annotations are saved automatically and remain part of the document within your leafplan. You can:

  • Return to your notes at any time

  • Download the annotated version as a PDF

  • Share it with family members or advisors with the annotations intact

Tips for Effective Use

  • Use highlights and comments together to keep your observations organized and contextual

  • Annotate ahead of family or advisory meetings to guide focused discussion

  • Bookmark pages with multiple annotations for faster navigation later

By integrating annotation tools directly into your document workflow, leafplanner helps turn passive document review into an active part of your planning and communication process.
